The Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system to be introduced in Iskandar Malaysia in the immediate future is expected to not only stimulate the economy but will ease the traffic conditions in Iskandar Malaysia. A senior lecturer in the Department of Urban and Regional Planning (UTM), Dr. Muhammad Zaly Shah in an interview with Utusan Malaysia reported, with the BRT, it is certain that Iskandar Malaysia will continue to attract and be the focus of local and foreign investors. The BRT is a system where a lane is designated just like that of the Light Rail Transit (LRT), but it is for the use of the bus specifically. The BRT system will be developed in phases and the first phase is expected to be ready in two years and more than 100 stops have been identified. Dr. Muhammad Zaly is confident that with the introduction of the BRT system, users of the public transport in Iskandar Malaysia will increase from 15 to 30 percent in the future. Implementation of the BRT service in Iskandar Malaysia will utilise a combination of the systems from Seoul (South Korea), Melbourne (Australia), Curitiba (Brazil) and Bogota (Colombia). It is envisaged that Johor will have the best public transportation system in Malaysia and will become the example to other states should the BRT be implemented as planned in Iskandar Malaysia.
