EV car charger team receives letter of completion from MOSTI

KUALA LUMPUR, 16 October 2017 – The Soft Trust for IOT Enviroment team of Advanced Informatic School, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) has received a recognition letter of completion from Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI), today.

Associate Prof. Nazri (right) receiving certificate from Datuk Panglima Wilfred.

The certificate was handing over by its minister Datuk Panglima Wilfred Madius Tangau at MOSTI Innovation Dialog ’17, near here today.

Certificate of completion.

Project leader, Associate Professor Dr Nazri Kama said, the team has succesfully completed a project named The Development of A Universal Electric Vehicle Charger for Standard and Rapid Charging.

The project worth RM1.9 million was funded by MOSTI and kicked start on June 2015 and completed on May 2017.

“The project was initiated to support the Electric Vehicle (EV) business ecosystem readiness for Malaysia environment.

“One of the main challenge in implementing the EV business is the power electricity rating differs in regards to different EC car power rating requirements,” he said.

Associate Professor Nazri said, currently, an electric vehicle charger would normally be present to charge a selected vehicle type.

He said, a Japanese manufactured charger would be specialised for Japanese EVs while an American charger for American EVs and European chargers for European manufactures EVs.

“Thus, this project is to overcome the above said challenge by proposing a universal EV charger that is able to support different power rating requirements.

“The novelty of the project is the “universality” of the developed charger which refer to the capability to charge any EV car from different EV car manufacturers,” said.

He cited, the main collaborators for the project were Panasonic System Engineering (M) Sdn Bhd, Nichicon (M) Sdn Bhd, Scan Consulting Services Sdn Bhd and Entrust Consultancy.

The QS Asia University Rankings: UTM improves its performance

The QS Asia University Rankings was launched with the aim of highlighting the top universities in Asia, shining a spotlight on the rapid development of many higher education systems in this dynamic world region. The methodology is adapted from that used for the QS World University Ranking, such as Academic Reputation; Employer Reputation; and Faculty to Student Ratio, but also considers a set of performance metrics carefully tailored for the region.

Universiti Teknologi Malaysia improved its performance and leaped 14 places to #49 in the QS Asia University Rankings 2018. Considering there are approximately 11,900 universities regionally*, this makes UTM one of the top 1.0% universities in Asia.

Based on the performance indicators assessed, and at #19 the Faculty Student indicator is the strongest one for UTM. Additionally, UTM also performed well in the International Student indicator. This significant performance is largely attributed to the strong commitment by UTM faculty members to provide the best support in facilitating students’ learning experience, while harnessing potential talents among students to strive for excellence.

UTM is also set to engage in more impactful research collaborations that can ultimately lead to improved performance through joint publications and increased citations. At the same time, UTM will continue its efforts in enhancing research collaborations with partners across the globe especially in areas of mutual interests. This would help UTM researchers to leap forward and stay relevant and visible among peers at the global level.

Nevertheless, it should be noted that although rankings are useful for benchmarking, they should neither be viewed as the only measure of excellence, nor should they dictate how a university should move forward.

What is more important is to focus on the fundamentals of quality education, enhancing academic and research capacity and instilling a strong mindset and culture for improved reputation at the global level. This is what UTM will continue to strive for to reach greater heights.

Talk by Dr. Rozzeta Dolah at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), USA on Variation Measurement and Improvement in Industry/ Engineering Application

On 17 October 2017, Dr. Rozzeta Dolah was invited to present a talk at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), USA on “Variation Measurement and Improvement in Industry/ Engineering Application”. The talk was attended by MIT professors, undergraduate and graduate students from engineering faculty. As there is a very little guidance for the practitioners/ engineers to select an appropriate strategy of robust measurement systems – What, When & Where to use Taguchi method versus other experimental design method of eliminating noise and variations, the talk has provided a solid underpinning of Taguchi method in controlling variation for measurement system. This is crucial to determine the degree of optimization, resolution required, time and costs constraints, nature of the problem, and robustness approach for a given problem in a process. The talk covered the wide spectrum of robust quality engineering such as essential parameters in data analysis, control of variation in measurement process, controlling defects through six sigma methodology and variation elimination. These elements undoubtedly provide the guidelines of what a robust measurement system should be in ensuring the measurement to represent the measurand. Therefore, the gap between theoretical uncertainty engineering and the measurement in real practice is reduced. Measurement errors, difficulties in determining the noise parameters, and confusion between the appropriate strategy to use are among the questions arised from the audience.

Profile:

Dr. Rozzeta Dolah is a senior lecturer at UTM Razak School of Engineering and Advanced Technology, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia. She is currently pursuing her post doctoral at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, MIT, USA in Mechanical Engineering department under Microfluidics and Nanofluidics Research laboratory.

Abstract :

Soils are human in nature. Uncertainties, history, colours and background dominates the behaviour of the soil. Understanding its behaviour is a complicated task. Prediction on its behaviour is the best solution offer so far without any assurance on its performance. Terzaghi(1936) once said , “soils are made from natures and not by man, and the product of natures are always complex”. Many uncertainties involves in predicting the behaviour of soils. From extracting, handling and testing which bound to accumulate errors and disturbance to the sample, will cause a deviations from its actual behaviours. Question will arise from a designer as representative samples taken from site may not resembles at all since statistically only a small portion is being taken from a large area. Geotechnical Engineering fields are related with daily life. Slopes, foundations, excavations, flood barrier, anchoring to name a few are geotechnical construction that needs high safety design for the comfort of the public. Engineer must struggle to design in such a way as to avoid failure, which could result in loss of property, damage to the environment of the user of that technology, and possibly injury or even loss of life. However, failures in geotechnical construction seems to be a common scenario nowadays. From common structural settlement to a mass slope failures, many Geotechnical Designers have come forward with various state of the art in rectification works at the design stage to obtain better and safer constructions to the public. The design and constructions has been improvised in lieu to the lesson learn from the previous failure. New developments in design are often the direct consequence of lessons learnt from previous failures, which are caused when the designers went too far beyond the state-of the art or the contractors did not implement the design intent in the construction. This combination with increase in knowledge and development of new materials actually led to the occurrence of more failures, principally as a result of enhanced demand for many types of novel structures for which there were no historical precedents. There is no question that the trial-and-error process of designing and constructing, over the centuries, resulted in the loss of properties and life. It is not that failure is desirable, or that anyone hopes for or aims for it. But failures, sometimes appalling, are inevitable, and given this fact, engineers say it pays to make good lesson learned to prevent any possible future mistakes. This lecture will focus on the tropical soil geotechnical hazard which lead to the necessity of understanding its behaviour which cause the failure for future improvement of the construction.

UTM, Asia Top 10 Young University

REPOST

UTM, Asia Top 10 Young University

Unsurprisingly for a continent of its size, Asia has a large number of universities to choose from, with a significant number included in the QS World University Rankings® 2018. While many prestigious Asian universities date back to the 19th or early 20th century (if not before), the region is also home to many fast-rising young institutions.

In fact, Asia boasts six uninterrupted places at the top of the QS Top 50 Under 50 2018, which showcases the world’s top universities under 50 years old.

A total of 21 young universities in Asia are included in the Top 50 Under 50, more than any other region. This includes universities from across the continent, in both the far east and the far west of Asia, including countries such as Israel, the United Arab Emirates and Qatar. Out of all the Asian countries featured, Hong Kong and Malaysia each have the most entries (four each), with all but one of Hong Kong’s representatives appearing in the top 10.

UTM is ranked at number 10 in the list of top 10 young universities in Asia in 2018, 21st in the Top 50 Under 50 and 253rd in the world this year. A research-intensive university, UTM was established in 1972 and specialises in engineering, science and technology. It is located in Kuala Lumpur and Johor Bahru and aims to be a world-class centre of academia and technological excellence.

Bridging The Academia-Industry Gap: A Successful Project of Two Nations

REPOST

The inaugural Swiss Innovation Challenge Asia Project, a project of two nations, Switzerland –Malaysia, marks another successful milestone with the Grand Finale of the Business Innovation Challenge, in Universiti Teknologi Malaysia Kuala Lumpur. The 9 months long project, aimed to develop and grow businesses through commercialisation of science and technology innovations in Malaysia, kick started in January 2017 with 100 participating teams from all over Malaysia. Teams comprised of new businesses (less than 2 years old), researchers, students, and NGOs across Malaysia. This project provides the needed knowledge transfer to individuals and teams, also bridging the much highlighted industry-academia gap. Mentors for each team are selected based on their track records in business and consulting, network and expertise.

The Grand Finale, happening on the 18th September 2017 in UTM KL witnessed teams pitching their innovation and business model, aiming to penetrate the global markets. As this project is strongly supported by the Ministry of Science, Technology & Innovation (MOSTI) and the Federal Commission of Science & Technology, Switzerland, the ceremony will witness the MOSTI Minister along with the Switzerland Ambassador gracing the event. Champions will win a lucrative sum of cash, USD15000 (first prize), USD5000 (2ndprize), USD3000 (3rd prize) and USD5000 (Special Prize- Internationalisation Track) – amongst the highest cash prize awarded to such challenges in Malaysia.

Universiti Teknologi Malaysia’s Azman Hashim International Business School (Azman Hashim IBS) partners with the University of Applied Sciences & Arts Northwestern Switzerland (FHNW) to organise and run this exciting project. Out of 100 teams joining the project in January, the final 25 teams (finalists) will be professionally groomed by Azman Hashim IBS the next following years to introduce and sustain their businesses abroad. This pilot project of two nations brings together the industry and academia in an R&D and business setting, introducing high impact entrepreneurial projects in the long run, while championing the concept of Industry and University 4.0 at the same time. This project opens vast opportunities for new venture development, innovation and research collaborations. The multiplier effects of this project can be observed through various joint ventures and collaborations, events and project spin-offs, and there will be more to be harvested in the next few years.

UTM Student Residential Complex offers complete self-contained accommodation

KUALA LUMPUR, May 11, 2017 – Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) is offering self-contained accommodations that are complete, comfortable, modern and comply to international standards.

The complex, built on an area of 26.4 acres in the campus near Jalan Maktab, near here named Residensi UTMKL comprises four towers for between 11 and 22 floors.

The complex contains 500 rooms and will be professionally managed by Royal Widad Hotel, The Regency and Dormani Halmark, all of whom have extensive experience in the hospitality industry in the country.

Rooms will be managed as a hotel and three-star service appartments to provide comfort and convenience of fully equipped accommodations for tenants.

Residensi UTMKL contains a seven-storey podium and four towers for accommodation. Tower 1 is the highest tower with 22 floors containing 150 units of two-bedroom accommodations.

Meanwhile, the 13-storey Tower 2 consists of 50 units of three-bedroom accommodation units, followed by Tower 3, an 11-storey tower containing 118 studio units, and Tower 4, a 14-storey tower containing 182 studio units.

In addition, Residensi UTMKL features a 10-lane bowling hall, a multipurpose hall that can accommodate up to 500 guests, a swimming pool, 60 business lots of retail space taking up 39,860 square meters, and features 719 parking lots.

Construction of the complex is in line with the Ministry of Higher Education’s intent to promote the Public Universities (UA) to generate their own income to reduce dependence on the government.

Construction of the complex and its location near the centre of the city is expected to attract more students from home and abroad to study in various fields in UTM.

Residensi UTMKL’s construction costs amounted to RM171.5 million obtained through a loan from the Employees Provident Fund (EPF), which amounted to RM180 million.
The idea of its construction was sparked by former UTM Vice-Chancellor, Dato ‘Seri. Ir. Dr. Zaini Ujang in 2009 and received the support of the Board of Directors and the Ministry of Higher Education and Ministry of Finance.

Residensi UTMKL’s construction was managed “in-house” in its entirety – contract documents, procurement, contract deals, appointment of contractors, financial management, project management administration; all using UTM’s own expertise.

This move allowed UTM to save RM4 million in consultation fees alone.

To date, as much as 85 percent of the retail space has already been booked by confirmed tenants, among them UTMSPACE, EliteBowl, fast food outlets Burger King, Pizza Hut and Subway, 99Speedmart retailers, department stores my.News.com and Gloria Jean’s Coffee.

Residensi UTMKL was built by contractors Ahmad Zaki Sdn Bhd (AZSB) beginning in July 2013 and was completed on May 7, 2017 and presented by its Chairman Datuk Prof. A Rahman @ Omar Abdullah to UTM Vice-Chancellor Prof. Datuk Ir. Dr. Wahid Omar in the presentation ceremony today.

Also present were Chairman of the Board of Directors of UTM, Tan Sri Abdul Halim Ali and AZRB Group Managing Director Dato ‘Sri Haji Wan Zaki Haji Wan Muda.

UTM is the 1st Runner-Up for ABU Asia-Pacific Robot Contest (ROBOCON) 2017 Tokyo

REPOST

UTM is the 1st Runner-Up for ABU Asia-Pacific Robot Contest (ROBOCON) 2017 Tokyo

September 12, 2017 by Office of Corporate Affairs

Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), representing Malaysia, has won the 1st runner-up in the ABU Asia-Pacific Robot Contest (ROBOCON) 2017 which was held at Tokyo, Japan from 26-27 August 2017.

A multi-disciplinary UTM team consists of thirty-five undergraduate students from four different faculties, i.e. Faculty of Electrical Engineering (FKE-24), Faculty of Mechanical Engineering (FKM-6), Faculty of Computing (FC-4) and Faculty of Education (FP-1). The team manager is Assoc. Prof. Ir. Dr. Mohd Ridzuan bin Ahmad from FKE.

Founded in 2002, ABU ROBOCON, an annual robotic competition, aims to be a platform for developing autonomous robots to help humans (residential and industrial) in their daily life.

The theme of the ABU ROBOCON competition is changing and set by the host country. A total of 19 teams from 18 countries were competing in the competition.

The theme for this year’s event is ‘The Landing Disk’ introduced by host country Japan. Each team has to build one robot.

The theme revolves around the word “asobi” (play), which is also a fundamental philosophy behind ROBOCON. In “asobi,” playful, unique, original show of skills is often more important than winning or losing, as everyone – friend and foe alike – can applaud and enjoy them. So, in the “asobi” spirit: playful, unique, original robot designs and strategies are given the main priority.

Each game will be conducted between two teams, each with one (1) robot. The game field is a rectangle divided into two sides for each team. Each side consists of a Start Zone, Throwing Area, and Loading Zone. On the field are seven (7) spots consisting of a circular table attached to a column with varying heights and areas.

Of the seven (7) spots, five (5) are placed along the center line dividing the sides, while the remaining two (2) are placed near to each side. At the start of the game, a beach ball rests on the center of all the spots. The number of discs a team can use during the game shall be fifty (50) placed at the Loading Area.

After the start of the game, the team may load discs onto its robot when the robot reaches the Loading Area. The robots of both teams may throw discs at any ball on any spot to knock the balls off the spots. Scores will be counted when a team’s disc lands on a spot where its ball has been knocked off.

When all the balls have been knocked off of their spot and a team successfully lands its discs on all the spots, that team reaches “APPARE!”, and is declared the winner of the game.

If neither team reaches “APPARE!”, and either both use up the fifty (50) discs or the game time of three (3) minutes passes, the game shall end. The winner will be decided by who has the higher score at the said end of the game.

Malaysia team beat several strong teams during the tournament. In the group stage, Malaysia team beat Korean and Iranian teams. In the quarterfinal, Malaysia team beat Japan team represented by University of Tokyo. While in the semifinal, Malaysia team beat Thailand team.

In the final match, there were between Malaysia or Vietnam to fight for the victory. Malaysia team ended with the 1st runner-up.

In all of the winning matches, Malaysia team successfully completed the task, also known as “APPARE”. Malaysia team shows that the quality of UTM’s students is recognized at the international level.

Summer School 2017 in Faculty of Civil Engineering, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia.

REPOST

Summer School 2017 in Faculty of Civil Engineering, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia.

A total of 9 students from Bisha University located in Saudi Arabia have participated in a summer school programme organized by Faculty of Civil Engineering, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) between 22nd of August to 28th of August 2017. This program is also a joint program between Language Academy, Faculty of Civil Engineering and Faculty of Mechanical Engineering. The students comprised of two courses, i.e. civil and mechanical engineering. The main aim of this program was to provide UTM learning experiences to the students of Bisha University. For this, Faculty of Civil Engineering has prepared three main highlights, where the students were exposed to open-ended lab, wastewater treatment plant and mangrove. All of the three activities were not experienced by the students in their home university. The exposure was complimented with lectures given by the Associate Professors and senior lecturers of the faculty. The fundamental principles delivered were new information to these students.

For the first activity, students were introduced to hydrological cycle and how water pollutants were transported along the river in this cycle. The connection was explicitly explained. This was followed by the explanation on Malaysian Water Quality Index, an index used to classified river pollution. During the lectures, the students were actively participated making the lectures very lively.

To ensure the students have a better understanding on their lectures, they are required to do some experimental and field works.

The collected water samples were measured for chemical oxygen demand (COD), biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), pH, total suspended solids, ammonical nitrogen and dissolved oxygen. While civil engineering students were busy with water sampling and experimental measurement, mechanical students were in the hydraulic laboratory running pipe friction and centrifugal pump characteristics tests. Those two tests are important for mechanical engineers to choose the suitable pump to minimize the energy usage in water, wastewater and any other industrial plants.

In the second activity, Bisha students visited Indah Water Konsortium (IWK) Sdn. Bhd. wastewater treatment plant located in Medini, Nusajaya. Here, information on the treatment technologies employed was imparted by the engineers working in IWK to the civil engineering students. Meanwhile, mechanical engineering students were explained on the pumping systems used and the current energy usage of the treatment plant.

Mangrove visit to Pulau Kukup were the last activity of this summer school program. Civil engineering students were required to observe the aquaculture activities at the surrounding area that can affect the biodiversity of the mangrove in Pulau Kukup. They were expected to propose mitigation measures in protecting the mangrove in Pulau Kukup. For mechanical engineering students, they were given the task to construct a do-it-yourself anemometer to measure the wind speed in Pulau Kukup. Following the measurement, the potential energy to be harvested was computed. They were also asked to propose the potential wind turbine location in Pulau Kukup.

Apart from academic activities, the mangrove visit has opened their eyes on the importance of environmental and biodiversity protection. This was something which they would never be able to experience in Arab Saudi.

Students were actively engaged with the online activity provided by Dr Shamila on Water Quality
Monitoring lecture.

Planting the Seeds for a Better Future

The culture of giving is indeed embedded in the core values of UTM graduates, and this was shown at the UTM Faculty of Mechanical Engineering’s alumni dinner at the Residensi UTM KL last Saturday, where mock checks totalling RM30,000 were presented to the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic & International), Prof. Dr Zainuddin Abdul Manan. The sale of the tables for the dinner, and also the Touch n Go cards from UTMAlumni also provided the additional funds, much needed in the current economical climate.

UTM welcomes donations in any form, and as much or as little as the corporate entity or the individual can spare. Every ringgit that goes into the endowment fund ensures that poor students are able to continue with their studies, and are able to have food in their bellies at night. Your contribution, no matter how small, matters.
Together we can make a difference.

Finite Element (FE) method is a numerical approach made available for engineers to perform stress analyses on engineering components and structures. The method has been made available, in the form of commercial FE analysis software as essential design and analysis tool for engineers. The software can be employed for solving problems involving complex geometries, combined loadings and non-linear materials responses where analytical solution is limited or often nonexistent. Being a general purpose design and analysis software, its utilization requires a thorough understanding of the simulation methodology. This includes continuum discretization, representation of boundary conditions, selections of material models, element mesh optimization, model validation and physical interpretation of numerical results. These requirements rest beyond traditional university-level courses on theoretical aspects and numerical implementation of the method.

At the end of the workshop, participants should be able to
–  Describe steps in solving engineering problems using FE method.
–  Identify essential requirements in performing engineering simulation of structural problems.
–  Set-up FE model of engineering structures for solution using Abaqus software.
–  Interpret, evaluate and present FE results for displacements, strains and stresses.

Times Higher Education Asia-Pacific Ranking 2017: UTM joint top university in Malaysia

Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) was ranked the top university in Malaysia in joint position with Universiti Putra Malaysia according to the Times Higher Education’s inaugural Asia-Pacific University Ranking 2017. The ranking came from the analysis of thousands of universities across 38 different nations in East Asia, Southeast Asia and Oceania, which includes prestigious universities from Australia and New Zealand.

The ranking uses the same performance indicators as the THE World University Rankings 2016-17. However the weightings are specially recalibrated to reflect the priorities of institutions in the Asia-Pacific region, making it a more accurate indicator of the dynamism of the rapidly growing higher education market in the region.

The performance indicators are grouped into five areas: Teaching (the learning environment), Research (volume, income and reputation), Citations (research influence), International outlook (staff, students and research), and Industry income (knowledge transfer).

For UTM to have attained the highest joint rank in Malaysia at 121-130 is an achievement that is largely attributed to the strong commitment by UTM faculty members, staff and students, and reflects the motto of the Malaysian Ministry of Education “Soaring Upwards”.

SINOPSIS KURSUS:

UTM AMTEC membrane technology penetrates international market

Its director, Prof. Dr. Ahmad Fauzi Ismail said he managed to supply products and technology transfer to the the Water Research Center, Kuwait Institute for Scientific Research (KISR) through open bidding recently.

According to him, the product called “Customized Spinning Hollow Fiber Membrane System” was designed and developed entirely by AMTEC research groups that will be used in the study of separation and water treatment technology.

“This product is a system specially designed to be used for the production of hollow fiber membranes in a variety of types and sizes depending on the application.

“Two researchers from AMTEC, Mohd Suhaimi Abdullah and Ng Be Cheer were in Kuwait from 11 to 15 June this year to provide training and courses to researchers at the ISR,” he said.

He noted that through the training of researchers in the ISR can produce their own hollow fiber membranes and improve the skills, expertise and new ideas in technology-based membranous partition.

He said that in the past, UTM AMTEC membrane products have been marketed abroad at the University of King Fahd of Saudi Arabia, Prince of Songkla University, Thailand and COMSATS Institute of Information Technology of Pakistan, other than the market in Malaysia.

“AMTEC is expected to further widen the income generation through the development and supply of systems based on membrane technology through research collaborations in the future.

“As a result of further discussions, KISR are very interested in using the membrane technology introduced by AMTEC to develop a water treatment system with the concept of zero waste liquid,” said the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research and Innovation) UTM.

Ahmad Fauzi further stated that KISR want to develop research-based membrane technology for sea water treatment and wastewater treatment in the future for the sustainable use of water in Kuwait.

He said the success of the international market proved that Malaysian Public Universities have no shortage of research that is able to produce quality products.

Funding Talk program audiences are among the target beneficiaries of the High Impact Program 2 Fund (HIP2), Platcom Ventures Sdn Bhd.

Innovation and Commercialisation Centre (ICC), Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) has once again conducted a Funding Talk session in-collaborated with the PlaTCOM Ventures Sdn. Bhd. to give awareness on HIP2 funding offered by Platcom Ventures Sdn Bhd at the same time conducted a one-to-one screening session to UTM’s ready-to-commercialize products.

Represented by Dr. Ng Sing Kwei, HIP2 will comprehensively aid in the IP licensing and royalty payments, prototype development, productization, as well as product testing and certifications, within the duration of 1.5 years.

The main objective of this program is to discover commercialization funding opportunities and nurture UTM entrepreneurs with innovative strategy towards promoting economic growth and development.

Amongst the six beneficiaries are the “Commercialisation of Encapsulation & Nano Carrier Technology for Wellness Products” by Phyto Biznet Sdn. Information:

Kindly be informed that I have resorted to ranges instead of displaying the exact CAM for every student in our class. This is to avoid panic or more peculiarly, overly feeling good as some of you might be too engrossed with CAM. This happened to me in the past.

I wish to highlight that your ‘range’ should be treated ONLY as an indication to gauge your current position in the course. Your exact CAM (which I keep the record) would still be used in the final computation.
