Introduction

Information and knowledge about land use and land cover that are up to date and reliably precise are essential to sustainable resource planning and management activities in cities.  A variety of techniques have been used in gathering, managing and analysing land use and land cover information, ranging from traditional techniques such as actual fieldworks and aerial photograph interpretation to the use of advanced technologies such as high resolution satellite images, GPS and GIS packages.

The Urban Studies Laboratory (in short the Urban Lab) was set up in the Faculty of Built Environment with a view to fulfilling the needs of studying land use and resource planning under the Urban and Regional Planning Program in UTM.  This has been achieved through the provision of necessary teaching, learning and research facilities and resources, including up-to-date technical apparatuses and software packages.

As the world marches rapidly into the ‘urban century’ with over half its population living in urbanised regions and areas, and as Malaysia inches towards becoming a developed, urbanised nation, the study and research of the city and region are becoming increasingly complex, challenging and important.  Cognisant of this, the Urban Lab is gearing itself towards meeting the emerging scholarly needs of urban studies and research at both the undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

GOAL

To support the achievement of the Faculty and the Department of Urban and Regional Planning’s vision and mission to be recognised as a centre of excellence for professional education in the built environment and urban and regional planning.

OBJECTIVE

To provide state of the art teaching, learning and research facilities in the field of sustainable urban and regional planning and resource management.
